The Indie Writer’s Network exists to allow independently published writers the opportunity to network to gain the support that we don’t otherwise have working independently. To this end, we’ve set a few policies in place to keep this a supportive environment.

1. Only indie writers and aspiring authors are invited to join.

We want to keep this network focused and free from being over-run with advertising that targets writers. This means, for example, that if you are in a related field but do not write, you are not eligible for membership. However, you are welcome to purchase a listing in our Business Directory to draw awareness to the services you can provide to our members.

Note: For our purposes, we are defining “indie” as self-published and small press published.

2. Only advertise where appropriate.

In creating this site, we did consider the possibilities it could have for helping writers gain exposure to their work. We want to see this happen. However, please do so with decorum. Please do not feed the activity stream every five minutes with ads for your books (we get enough of that on Twitter) and do not hound members with personal messages to buy your books. Appropriate places to advertise include your personal networked blog, the “Author” and “Books” section of group blogs, and the “Author Bio” and “Promote Your Books Here” topics on the group discussion forums. Participating in discussion forums, groups, and submitting articles to the group blogs or the network’s front page will also help you gain exposure and make readers curious about your work. In addition, you can place an inexpensive Featured Book ad, which will give others an opportunity to learn more about your books.3. Play nice.

There are enough critics out there. This isn’t the place for them. If you are an indie writer and would like to post book reviews on your site, you may do so, but if it’s done tastefully. Any author or book bashing will be reprimanded and if repeated, you may be asked to leave the community.
